Creative Writing Rubric
Write an original story that uses dialogue, suspense, and a reversal to engage the reader’s attention. Suspense= getting the reader to ask, “What is going to happen next?” Reversal= the reader thinks one thing is going to happen, but another plausible result occurs.

High A- The story contains all of the following:
• A technique of suspense is used:
Repetition
More than one possible outcome
Delay in the progression of the story
No defined ending
Other? _________________________________

• The story has structure (beginning, middle, end)
• The timeline of events is clear and consistent
• A reversal is used
• There is a clear conflict
• Dialogue is used to convey character
• The story is believable
• All of the text is necessary to the development of the story

Low A- the parameters for an A have been meet, but improvement could be made:
The timeline of events are not as clear as they could be.
More dialogue would strengthen the character you have developed.
Cutting an action that does not appear necessary would strengthen the story
The element of suspense can be identified, but it does not add value to the story
The reversal does not create the intended effect of catching the reader off guard

B- one or more of the following apply:
The overall story can be understood, but the timeline of events contains inaccuracies that cause the reader to question and re-read passages of text
There are whole passages of text that should be cut because they do not add value to the story
An element of suspense cannot be clearly identified
A reversal cannot be clearly identified

C- one or more of the following apply:
There is no dialogue
It takes effort for the reader to understand what the story is telling

D- one or more of the following apply:
The story is missing a defined problem
The story does not appear to be for a general audience, bur rather an inside joke among friends
The reader is not sure what the story is about

E-
Nothing

• Have student volunteer read the excerpt from the Suspense packet regarding he Hitchhiker.

• Explain to students that the will listen to a radio play. They are to think about the different ways suspense is created.

• After listening to the play students are to respond to the following reflection question in their notes: Describe how suspense is created in the telling of the story The Hitchhiker.

• Students can share their responses with the class with time permitting.
