Creative Writing Rubric 2013
Write an original story that is one to five pages.
High A- The story contains all of the following:
- The story is an original production for this class
- The story has structure (beginning, middle, end)
- The timeline of events is clear and consistent
- There is a clear conflict
- The story is believable
- All of the text is necessary to the development of the story
Low A- the parameters for an A have been meet, but improvement could be made:
The timeline of events are not as clear as they could be.
The story would be stronger if an unnecessary action was cut
B- one or more of the following apply:
The overall story can be understood, but the timeline of events contains inaccuracies that cause the reader to question and re-read passages of text
There are whole passages of text that should be cut because they do not add value to the story
C- one or more of the following apply:
It takes effort for the reader to understand what the story is telling
D- one or more of the following apply:
The story was turned into another class for an assignment
The story is missing a defined problem
The story does not appear to be for a general audience, but rather an inside joke among friends
The reader is not sure what the story is about

By the Way....
Some day when I'm feeling better I'll go back there and actually write the thing down. They should all be cheered by it, for isn't it what they want? What we all want: to leave a message behind us that has an effect, if only a dire one; a message that cannot be cancelled out.
But such messages can be dangerous. Think twice before you wish, and especially before you wish to make yourself into the hand of fate. (Think twice, said Reenie. Laura said, Why only twice?)

Random Simulation:
1. Key word: government. Random words: amusement, photographs. The government spies on the people and takes photographs for their amusement.
2. Key word: life. Random words: gambler, Mary. A lady named Mary wants to restore her life by giving up gambling.

11) Reversal
They reached the time portal with a minute to spare. Panting from the heat and exhaustion from darting in and out of the COSPS’ way, Azale made her way through the door, suspiciously and slowly. She needed to this quick and clean. Taking a glance down the bridge and into the murky waters below, she planned out her next action. Sofia was just taking out the sheet of paper with the portal passcode and gazing around with what she thought was her last look at Maryland 2011, she punched in the digits. Azale was quick to her feet and aggressively steered Sofia towards the bridge ledge. Sofia was taken aback by her “friend’s” abrupt action and pushed her back. The move was unsuccessful. Azale retreated to planting her hands on Sofia’s shoulders and nudged her towards the bridge.
“Azale, what happened to were in this together?!” Sofia yelled against the portal’s deafening noise.
“We were never friends, Sofia! Don’t you see? My life here is nothing but an endless chain of boredom. You belong here, where you can eat junk food and watch TV for as long as you want. I belong in the future!” Azale harshly laughed.
“I guess you can’t trust anyone anymore…”Sofia’s voice slowly trailed off into nothing as she stumbled backwards. Azale took this clumsy move and pushed her off the bridge.
“I’ll be seeing you, Sofia! When you find a way to get back to your mommy and daddy! See you!” Azale grinned evilly. She picked up the portal passcode and continued entering the pin. The portal door opened, and in stepped Azale.
(This is a reversal because all this time, Sofia has expected Azale to be on her side. She expected her to help retrieve the passcode for the portal. Azale has plans on her own. She pushes Sofia off the bridge and walks into the portal door.)

#12 Show do not tell. Take a character from your story. Relate to the reader the emotional state of the character without explicitely telling the reader. Example, do not write that Sall is angry. Think of ways that you can show the reader instead.
I saw her face...she looked up. Her hands were full of wet droplets. And her eyes were red. I looked at her, looked behind me, then back at her. Right when I turned my head to her, she slapped me. I held my cheek, "What did you do that for?!?!" She stared at me with her glossy eyes. She stepped forward to my face, "You humiliated me." And she walked away.
~~~This is through the main characters point of view, after he tells everyone a girl he like's secret. Obviously she is embarrassed, but she also is very angry at the main character. I expressed her feeling through her actions of slapping and looking straight in the eye of the main character.

The portrait hung in the hallway of the art museum. Unlike all of the other pieces, it was not heavily guarded. Anybody could walk up and touch it, maybe even steal it. The weird thing was, nobody ever did. People walked up to it, then continued on their way, not taking much notice to it. It was the only piece on the fourth floor. One day, a young girl got curious. 'Why is this painting all alone on this floor, without any guard?" she asked herself. She decided to get a closer look. There was amazing detail. She touched it, to see what it was made of., until she realized that it was a mistake. By touching the portrait, her body disappeared. She was a ghost, whose image was stored in the portrait. All the little girl could do was sit there and wait for another curious one to come along and touch it, so she could get her life back.

What if something bigger than us was keeping us as pets the way we keep animals as pets?
What if political leaders voted for citizens instead of citizens voting for political leaders?

A girl is afraid of scary movies, but she overcomes her fear by not staying quiet in the theater.
